The paper of Assoc. Prof. Takeshi Tsuji (CO2 Storage Research Division, I²CNER) and his collaborators was published in “Earth, Planets and Space”.

In this paper, they estimated the attenuation characteristic of the seismic wave from the vertical seismic profiling data. The attenuation of seismic waveform could be a new seismic-derived parameter to evaluate the physical property of CO2 injection reservoir. The technique developed in this research can be applied to the estimation of CO2 leakage path (fracture) and monitoring, and expected to contribute to “the realization of safe CO2 storage in heterogeneous geological formation, typical in Japan”.
