Research Outline

Solid electrolytes and all-solid-state batteries

Design, synthesis and mechanistic understanding of inorganic Li- and Na-ion conductors, including halides, oxides and sulfides, and their integration into solid-state cells. The work targets fast ion transport, electrochemical stability, reduced use of critical materials and scalable processing.

Interfacial chemistry and operando diagnostics

Elucidation of reaction pathways and degradation at solid electrolyte/electrode interfaces. Operando and in situ spectroscopy are combined with electrochemical and structural measurements to relate interphase formation, charge transfer and mechanical contact to cell performance.

Ion-conducting oxides for energy conversion and thermo-ionics

Control of defect chemistry, surfaces and interfaces in ionic and mixed ionic-electronic conductors for intermediate-temperature solid oxide fuel and electrolysis cells, and for the direct conversion of thermal gradients into electrical energy.

Research Methods and Facilities

Air-sensitive synthesis, processing and cell assembly

Solid-state and mechanochemical synthesis, controlled atmosphere processing and heat treatment of inorganic electrolytes and electrodes. Glovebo based preparation of pellets, composites, interfaces and laboratory scale solid state cells, including dry processing approaches.

Electrochemical and thermal characterization

Temperature-dependent wide-range (GHz-mHz) impedance spectroscopy, DC polarization, cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic testing of ionic conductors, symmetric cells and full cells. Low-temperature Seebeck coefficient, Hall effect and Nernst effect measurements with temperature and applied magnetic field.

Operando/ In situ characterization

Operando/in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray difraction, Raman and Briollouin spectroscopy.
