Research Outline

CO₂ Geological Storage and Energy Recovery.

Research on CO2 injection into oil and gas reservoirs and coal seams for CO2 geological storage and enhanced recovery of residual oil and natural gas, and methane conversion of CO2 using underground microorganisms.

Underground hydrogenation of crude oil in depleted oil fields.

Research on technology to produce and recover hydrogen that is generated in-situ by steam reforming of hydrocarbon remaining in depleted oil reservoir.

Risk management in CCS.

Research on technology for early and reliable monitoring of leakage of CO2 stored underground in CCS to the surface.

Research Methods and Facilities

Gas injection and detection technologies using 5-100m boreholes installed in an outdoor test field on Ito campus.
Visualization and observation technologies for high temperature and high pressure conditions
