The International Institute for Carbon-Neutral Energy Research (WPI-I2CNER) at Kyushu University, in collaboration with the University of Göttingen, Germany, hosted the 2024 WPI Symposium & Summer School in Göttingen “Energy Research for a Carbon Neutral Future” from October 14 to 18, 2024.

The symposium was held at the Conference and Event House Alte Mensa in Göttingen from October 14 to 16, and there were total of 290 participants from institutions including Kyushu University, the University of Göttingen, the Institute of Science Tokyo (former Tokyo Institute of Technology), Kumamoto University, the Forschungszentrum Jülich, and the University of Illinois (USA). The first day featured presentations by leading researchers from each institution. On the second day, participants were divided into Sessions A and B, covering a wide range of energy-related research topics. The third day focused on hydrogen materials, and each day was marked by active discussions and exchanges of ideas.

The Summer School then took place from the afternoon of October 16 through October 18 at the University of Göttingen’s North Campus, with over 150 participants, including many young researchers. The program featured lectures by researchers from Japan and Germany, poster sessions, and lab tours, offering participants valuable networking opportunities, even during breaks.

Researchers from the University of Göttingen have served as principal investigators in I2CNER since its inception, fostering joint research efforts for over 15 years. Over the course of this five-day event, young researchers were offered an excellent platform to develop ideas with fellow researchers, strengthen international collaborations, and further the WPI’s new missions of “World-Leading Scientific Excellence and Recognition” and “Values for the Future.”
